Upstairs Balcony Lounge: At the top of the stairs, outside of the master and second bedrooms there is a large comfortable couch with side tables, as well as lounge chairs. This is an ideal spot to enjoy the ocean view and breeze, and of course watch the wildlife bounce through the yard. El Oasis is home to nesting Great Green Macaws, Spider and Howler Monkeys frequent the canopy, as well as sloths, toucans, coastal hawks, and a variety of other tropical birds.
Beach Area: A short walk through the yard takes you to our gate to the beach - Playa Grande. We have a picnic table there for your use with benches and tree swings for your enjoyment. There are also beach chairs available as well as beach towels and other beach toys. If you walk to the left out of our gate down the beach there is a river that cuts into the beach. This is a great spot for kids to play and swim. Just past the river is the best spot for surfing on Playa Grande. If you continue past the surfing area you come to a point and beyond that point is Arrecife Beach. If you walk out of our property and go to the right, you will find an old Panamanian tanker stuck in the sand where the ocean breaks. It is covered in colorful graffiti art and is very picturesque. If you continue that direction you will get to the town of Manzanillo - just a short 15 minute walk from El Oasis.
Location and Attractions: The property is located on Playa Grande beach, about 20 minutes down the road from the largest town in the area, Puerto Viejo, and just 5 minutes from the small town of Manzanillo. Manzanillo is literally the end of the road – you’ll then find 10,000 protected acres of jungle and mangroves - the Gandoca Wildlife Refuge. And then you’re in Panama.
Puerto Viejo: PV is filled with restaurants and small shops and little vendors. There is a farmers market on weekends (check locally for schedule) that includes local produce and specialty items like locally made chocolate. There are also a variety of bars and spots for nightlife in Puerto Viejo.
Cocles Beach: Just past Puerto Viejo is Cocles - this area is a busy beach for surfing and hanging out. There is a lot of activity with surfing and other rentals, food trucks and beachside rentals. There is a volleyball net with local games frequently happening on the beach. Cocles is also where you will find the closest groceries stores.
Punta Uva / Arrecife Beaches: Punta Uva Beach is consistently named among the top beaches in the world – for good reason. It is in a protected cove so the waves are small and the water is a beautiful turquoise blue. The beach has a jungle river cutting through it and you can rent kayaks on the beach for a lovely paddle down river to see monkeys and other wildlife. The beach runs up against a large rocky hillside that you can hike over to get the next beach - Arrecife. This is a great little hike with beautiful views. Arrecife is also somewhat protected with smaller waves and lovely beaches. The road behind the beach has a few cute restaurants as well and you can hike or drive quite far down the beach to get to some rather deserted beach areas that are gorgeous.
Gandoca Wildlife Refuge: Just on the other side of Manzanillo is the vast Gandoca Wildlife Refuge - a giant protected area including beach, ocean and jungle. It is great for day hikes and adventuring with beautiful beaches, snorkeling and vistas. You can walk there on the beach from our house in about 20 minutes or drive there in 5 minutes. To enter the park there is a requested donation - any amount is appreciated and will help continue its mission of educating and preserving this rich, biodiverse area.
Jaguar Rescue Center: Amazing animal rescue and rehab center just minutes from our property. A wide array of animals and very knowledgeable staff. Not to be missed. Highly recommend doing the VIP tour to get the most out of your time at the Center.
Ara Green Macaw Rescue Project: This is extremely close to our property and not to be missed. This project has single-handedly bringing the endangered Great Green Macaw back to the region. You will hear about the project and have the opportunity to see a TON of these majestic creatures up close as they fly around you. This organization placed the nest in our yard and we now have a nesting couple with lots of other Green Macaws visiting the property throughout the day.
