Positive: Our stay at Casa do Caneiro was absolutely wonderful. The casa is almost indescribable. It is a very large space with many different rooms and indoor and outdoor areas (patios, a cool game room) that are beautifully restored and preserve the history and original architecture. Watching the stars from the top patio, and looking out across beautiful expanse of wild gardens and quiet cobblestone streets felt like being in a world apart. The sound of babbling water from the small channel that ran alongside the house, and the clopping of donkeys passing occasionally, added to the feeling of finding a secret paradise. Everyone we encountered in the village where Casa do Caneiro is located, as well as in Vila Real, were very kind and welcoming. It's a fantastic area to stay for nature, culture, and as a home base for day trips in the area. There is fantastic hiking, swimming, Douro Valley wine country, historical spots to visit (e.g., Mateus Palace, town of Amarante), and so much delicious food in the area. Also, Carlos is hands down the best host ever. His communication is excellent-- he was proactive in sending directions and check-in info, and provided recommendations of places to stop on the drive up from Lisbon. We arrived quite late at night, and saw that he had left us fresh fruit, local pastries, and a bottle of <insanely delicious> local wine. He was communicative and responsive throughout our stay. He is a gem. Truly, we cannot speak highly enough of Casa do Caneiro, Carlos, and the entire area. It is such a special place. We can't wait to come back.
